About checker plate
Checker plate is flat steel with a raised pattern rolled into its surface by the last stand during hot rolling; diamond and teardrop are the two common patterns and serve the same purpose: preventing slips on wet and oily floors. The pattern height is not included in the thickness, sizes are given by base thickness; as the material is S235JR it welds, bends and drills easily and is protected outdoors by hot-dip galvanising. It is used for factory platforms, walkways, stair treads and landings, truck and trailer floors, ramps and gangways, machine guarding and duct covers. Thickness is chosen by span and load: 3–4 mm for foot traffic, 6 mm and above for forklift and vehicle traffic; anti-slip performance improves when the pattern runs across the direction of travel, so state the pattern direction on the drawing. Use galvanised plate outdoors and consider stainless or aluminium alternatives in food and chemical plants; spans over 1,500 mm need section reinforcement underneath.
