About HEA-HEB-IPE
HEA, HEB and IPE are European I sections with parallel inner flange faces, so bolted connections are made directly without tapered washers. IPE is narrow-flanged and light, an economical beam for restrained floor beams, roof beams and purlins. HEA and HEB are wide-flanged: at the same depth HEA is lighter, HEB has a thicker web and flange and higher load capacity; both are chosen for columns and beams over 6 m span, and the wide flange resists lateral buckling. They are used in building and industrial load-bearing systems, columns and main beams, bridges and walkways, heavy machine foundations, crane beams and prefabricated steel structures; where weight is limited HEA is about 20% lighter than HEB at the same depth, and S355J2 is preferred for dynamic loads and cold climates.
