About NPI-NPU profiles
IPN (NPI) is a narrow-flange I section and UPN (NPU) a U-section, both hot-rolled structural profiles; since the inner flange faces are tapered, tapered washers are used in bolted connections. IPN is an economical beam under bending, chosen for straight beams and purlins; UPN, with its open section, is preferred where the member is fixed from one side, such as frames, covers, racks and edge beams. Both are easy to cut to length, drill and weld; they are used in structural steel, platforms and stairs, machine and bench frames, industrial racking, crane runways and monorails, and door and frame fabrication. With a narrower flange than HEA/IPE of the same depth they need lateral restraint against buckling; for long spans HEA/HEB is used instead.
